The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm this decision right away after his victory in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment although he hails from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
