Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A extensive search and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Missions Initiated

Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total personnel, according to a navy statement.

The vessels had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Relief to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Recent Aid Mission

Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.

Political measures have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from various leaders highlighting the complex situation regarding relations.

Reacting to certain comments, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and secure the security of the sailors.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
