This Household Unofficial Video Game of the Year List for 2025
Alright, how did you experience this year in your household? Was it truly wonderful as people post on social media? Full of academic success for the kids and elaborate dress-up celebrations for the grownups? Or was it a sea of letdowns with only rare fun moments? And was any of it authentic, or have we all become seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity smiles?
I've corralled the family for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the paramount thing in twelve months: which releases we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my games column."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that I suggested it. Fair enough.
Game Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into acting, but when she took a break from vocals, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her character has a blooming utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has in real life.
Release the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Release I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this stunning, original game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Throw in the charm of the card design, and this is an definite pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Title I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I mention that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". How delightful. I get that it looks ace and is flawless if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and I’ve had enough. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Close call between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the garden at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or doomscrolling, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
