The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
