Los Angeles Battles Historic Heat Only One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
In the wake of torrential rains that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with unseasonably high conditions for late February.
Record-Setting Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer climbed to 91°F (33°C) in central LA, according to meteorologists. This exceeds the previous daily record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were noted on official charts for the region.
Public Health Warnings
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a car.
A Sharp Reversal
This sharp rise in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that battered the region last week. That system brought thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, causing evacuation orders for many residents.
Sadly, the severe weather also triggered a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead some relief is expected. Readings were forecast to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Several cities that experienced ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to experience the high eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can expect readings in the eighties, with a further cooldown on tap for the following week.
