Ken Burns has become more than a historical storyteller; he is a brand, a one-man industrial complex. Whenever he releases project arriving on the small screen, all desire a part of him.

The filmmaker completed “an astonishing number of podcasts”, he notes, wrapping up of his marathon promotional journey that included four dozen cities, dozens of preview events and hundreds of interviews. “With podcasts numbering in the hundreds of millions, I feel I’ve participated in a substantial portion.”

It irritated me when questioned, about the prominent cast. I explained, ‘These are artists.’ They represent global acting excellence and they can bring this stuff alive.”

Nuanced Narrative

Still, no contemporary observers remain, photography and newsreels forced Burns and his team to depend substantially on historical documents, weaving together the first-person voices of multiple revolutionary participants. This methodology permitted to introduce audiences not just the famous founders of the founders but also to “dozens of others who are seminal to the story”, several participants remain visually unknown.

Taylor maintains, a revolution that proclaimed the revolutionary principle of inherent human rights; a vicious internal conflict, separating rebels and supporters; and a worldwide engagement, another installment in a sequence of wars between imperial nations for control of the continent.
