Folly and Regal Arrogance Ruined Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet

The saga started with a single photograph, possibly the most consequential ever taken of a royal family member.

In the frame appeared the Earl of Inverness, standing closely beside a female youth, while another individual beamed suggestively in the backdrop.

Without that snapshot, taken at a gathering in 2001, who would have believed the claims of a young woman who stated she was moved across the Atlantic and obliged to have perfunctory sexual encounters with a individual of the monarchy?

An odd, revealing gesture by someone who had publicly stated to have never heard of her, said he could no have had relations with her, and yet provided millions of family resources to avert a protracted lawsuit.

Over a Decade of Scandal

Considering this, discussions of the royals acting decisively to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This controversy has continued for the largest portion of 15 years since that photograph, and an additional photo of Andrew ambling congenially with a disgraced financier surfaced.

  • Hubris: How long did his brothers and sisters, perhaps even his parents, know that Andrew was so arrogant?
  • Questionable Associations: They must have realized, if his staff and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some extremely unsavory associates given he publicly welcomed them to estates.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the family did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with state resources.

Trips were documented in public records: helicopter travel from the estate to a country club and back again in time for midday meal, exclusive air travel instead of regular transport, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".

A Life of Privilege

Then there was the arrogance which required subservience when he walked into a room or the profound awareness about his royal titles used on his correspondence in communication to his personal acquaintances.

He avoided accountability while his matriarch, who inexplicably spoiled him, was still surviving. The monarch did at least revoke him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the consequence of his catastrophic and, we now know, deceptive public statement six years ago.

Latest Events

It was only in the last 14 days that events progressed rapidly, following the release of accounts giving more disturbing details of his conduct and that of his connections.

Additional revelations have again exposed Andrew's assumption that he could avoid deceiving about his interaction with a notorious figure.

People (and the media) were far ahead of the royals. There was no one of any importance to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of presumption.

Institutional Fears

The wiser royals recognized that. The key objective is to pass on the institution, if not as previously at least intact and unstained.

Over time the last 190 years trying to reverse the legacy of past sovereigns, demonstrating they are useful, dutiful and reactive to their citizens.

He was placing all that in danger in an age when submission and secrecy is no longer adequate.

The Fallout

Finally, the famously hesitant king was pressured more. There was little choice. The palace had surrendered command of the narrative.

Now it is the loss of designations and the continued and lifetime personal shame that will pain Andrew the most.

  • Reduction: Lowered to just a commoner
  • Past Example: The primary royal to lose his designations in modern times
  • Military Service: Notably stinging given his duty in the conflict

He is still a constitutional officer, in principle able to stand in for the sovereign, and he is still eighth in line to the monarchy, but not any of these will truly come to pass.

What Lies Ahead

Do individuals he meets still acknowledge him? Might they still slip up and call him Sir? Will they even say Andrew,

Naturally, he is not withdrawing to a common area, but to the sovereign's extensive property at a monarchical property.

At that location, he will be provided by the sovereign with one of the estate properties and given some sort of financial support.

This is not his former home, where he paid a token payment for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit far, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Outstanding Concerns

The situation continues. There are still documents in the hands of American legislators to be disclosed.

  • Political Pressure: Might parliament demand more
  • Financial Investigation: Or examine the waste of taxpayer funds
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his conduct

Possibly for the moment the reputational impact to the institution is contained. The message from the institution was plainly that the removal of designations was what the monarch, and notably other senior royals, wanted.

Changed Stance

No more illusion that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, notably, the concise communication showed evidently that the institution were aligning with the complainant's account of occurrences.

Furthermore, for the initial instance they ultimately showed regard for the victims: "The censures are judged required, despite the truth that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

Ultimately it is arrogance, self-seeking and indolence that will undermine the monarchy. In his foolishness, self-indulgence and venality, Andrew appears never to have understood that truth.
