British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
