A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from disorder. International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film inspired by a popular book aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is shown as having been chosen by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection
